Home is the foundation on which we build our lives. But every day 1 in 3 people around the world wake up without the security of safe affordable housing.

We’re working to change that. We know every safe affordable home sparks wider change, leading to better health, education and well-being, more economic growth and less poverty.

It all starts with an open door.

Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity is honored to have local artists support our Let’s Open the Door Campaign. The doors below showcase original work by artists in our community. Together, they weave a tapestry of what an open door truly means – in our communities and everywhere.

“Home to Hope.”

Home isn’t a place I arrived at — it’s a door I chose to leave open. In this piece, an old green door swings wide beneath a canopy of blossoms, inviting anyone weary from the world to step through.

Beyond it, a cracked stone path winds past a glowing cottage, reminding me that home is never a straight road, only a warm one. A lantern stays lit at the threshold, promising that no matter how late I return, light will be waiting. To me, home has always been less about walls, and more about a door that never quite closes.

Home, to me, is not a place but a feeling—a person, a memory, a moment of safety and belonging.

Inspired by a childhood photograph of my father and me riding together on his scooter, this painting captures more than a simple ride. It captures the freedom, love, and security I felt beside him. Through color, texture, and a dreamlike interpretation, I transformed an ordinary childhood moment into a timeless memory.

For me, home is my father’s presence, the familiar road, the wind in my face, and the little girl who always knew she belonged.

What Home Means to Me

Home is where I feel comfortable being myself and where I can use my imagination.

I filled my door with doodles because my mind is always full of different ideas, shapes, and random little drawings. The yellow pencil in the center represents my creativity. To me, home is where I can open the door and let my imagination come out.

This meditation-inspired Buddha painting is created to bring a sense of peace, calm, and positive energy into the home. The vibrant colors represent the beauty and energy of life, while Buddha’s peaceful expression reminds us to slow down, breathe, and find stillness within. The flowers and earthy golden textures add warmth, making this artwork a symbol of mindfulness, harmony, and inner peace. 🪷✨

My artwork is a waterfall which I went up close to see. The water represents the calmness of nature and the greenery around represents the freshness of nature. The rocks are less defined to emphasize the green trees and life around the rocks and waterfall.

WHAT IS HOME?

Home is not just an address. It is the feeling of being safe, loved, seen, and belonging.

The two children, wrapped in a quiet embrace, represent the simple comfort of knowing that someone is there for you. Across the water, candlelit paper boats carry fragile yet unwavering hope. The glowing doorway becomes a symbol of possibility — a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is one open door for a new beginning to emerge.

Through this work, I am opening a space for love, safety, belonging, hope, memories, and new beginnings.

Because sometimes, home begins with something as simple — and as powerful — as an open door.

Every open door can change a life. So let’s open the doors to HOPE.

Everyone deserves to have a home where they feel happy and safe. Finding security and peace of mind in your home gives a person the space to extend love to others.

I decoupaged an image that I created to convey peace, beauty, and love surrounding a home.

To me, home is the feeling of peace, warmth, and belonging found in familiar everyday moments. This painting is inspired by the balcony of my childhood home . A quiet space filled with plants, comforting views, and shared cups of tea. It holds memories of togetherness and the simple sense of security I felt while growing up. The two cups represent shared conversations, unhurried moments, and the comforting presence of loved ones. I hope this little balcony reminds others of a place or memory where they, too, have felt completely at home.

Home is where the heart finds its rhythm, grounded in the comforting embrace of family and the quiet joy of creation. Mandala meditation extends that feeling inward, offering a meditative space where simple geometric patterns help us breathe deeper, center our focus, and rediscover our inner peace.

Where Else Than Home?

Home, to me, is where the mind is calm, the body is relaxed, and the heart is full of love. It is family and friends, a warm cup of tea, a good book, quiet conversations with myself, and moments spent looking out the window.

The iconic Monica’s door is a playful symbol of friendship, laughter, and belonging. Through these simple moments, this artwork celebrates home not just as a place, but as a feeling of comfort, connection, and being completely yourself.

Art, for me, is a way of slowing down and truly observing the beauty in everyday life. I am deeply inspired by nature, realism, light, and emotion, and I use my work to capture moments that often go unnoticed. Through charcoal, acrylic, watercolor, and digital illustration, I explore texture, depth, shadow, and detail to create pieces that feel both personal and relatable.

I especially enjoy creating portraits, still life, and landscape artworks, where I can study the relationship between light and form and bring a sense of realism and emotion into each piece. My process is intuitive and meditative, allowing me to express feelings that are sometimes difficult to put into words.

Art has been a part of my life since childhood and continues to be a source of joy, comfort, and
self-discovery. Each artwork reflects a part of my inner world and my connection to the people, places, and moments that inspire me. Through my work, I hope to create a sense of calm and connection and encourage viewers to pause and appreciate the beauty that surrounds them every day.

Home is a place to shed the public persona and find comfort with a furry friend.

Home is not just a place. It is where memories are made and treasured.

As a longtime band parent, this painting represents much more than a community to me. It represents a family. A family built on respect, love, support, and appreciation for one another. It reminds me that a family works best when everyone comes together and works as one.

Individually, we each have our own strengths, talents, and unique contributions. But when we bring those gifts together, something truly magical can happen. We create connections, experiences, and moments that stay with us long after the music stops.

Home is a peaceful place where I can look out the window, watch the sunset over the mountains, and feel safe and at ease. To me, home is not just a place—it’s the feeling of comfort, peace, and belonging.

I think one of the joys of home ownership is being able to plant flowers and home a welcoming place. I was inspired by the stone cottage in Colonial Park and its loose array of flowers around the doorway. It reminded me if the time spent telling my mom about my day as she watered her garden.

Having a home is one of the most fundamental, basic things we need as humans. But having that safe space that’s all ours becomes especially essential when you are a single parent who wants to give your child a secure, happy life. As a single mom, I see so many other moms struggling to provide that safe haven to their children. With this picture I am trying to show that moment of walking through the door of a new home, knowing that it is truly yours.

Home: Home is more than the beams and boards that make a house. It’s the memories made inside, the little fingerprints on all the surfaces, the feeling of Warmth and never ending love that resides inside.
